The Pittsburgh Hornets Midget Minor team split their weekend series with the Washington Little Capitals this weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center. On Saturday afternoon, the Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:46 mark of the first period. Washington countered with three unanswered goals to take a 3 -1 lead. The Hornets countered back with a late second period goal to make it a 3-2 game heading to the third period. Wshington was able to score a goal early in the third period to seal a 4-2 victory.
On Sunday morning, the Hornets were looking to gain a split and scored three first period goals to lead 3-0 at the end of one period of play. Washington was able to get on the board with five minutes left n the second period to trim the Hornet lead to 3-1 as the teams headed to the locker room for the second period intermission. Any early third period goal allowed the Hornets to extend the lead to three goals, 4-1. Washington was able to trim the lead to two, 4-2, with a little over six minutes left in the game. The Hornets played strong defensively and held on for the 4-2 win and gain a split on the weekend.
The Hornets will return to the ice next on Thursday against Team Ohio in the first of four games at the Gilmour Academy Tournament in Gates Mills, OH.
